How the Information Learned in EDCI-516 Affects Our Students
Are reading skills important for literacy in diverse populations?
Yes, reading skills are important for literacy in diverse populations. Students coming from diverse backgrounds will experience acedemic success if they apply the reading skills outlined in this course. Students in the United States are taught in English, which creates a need for teachers to be more inquisitive about their student’s history. Student’s backgrounds may have put them at a disadvantage for getting basic literacy skills. In 2014, teachers must understand, broaden their skills, and be sensitive to the gap the different experiences students face between home and school. Teachers should learn about the cultural and language backgrounds of their students from culturally diverse groups. For instance, an ELL student has to constantly translate from English to their first language in their mind. Therefore, in class the student may be silent much of the time. Teachers must understand the nuances of the student’s culture and be consistent with gestures.
Teachers must explicitly be committed to and capable of using techniques that make a difference in their student’s success in literacy. Teachers have to address the diverse needs of each student in the classroom. Creating successful opportunities for students with limited proficiency in English requires an understanding of the language spoken in the homes of the students. The environment should provide “scaffolding” that links where the student currently is academically and personally with meaningful tasks, genuine respect for diversity, confidence, and security for all students. Teachers should express high expectations and genuine belief that the learning experiences in the classroom will result in each one’s success in literacy.
Student’s motivation is linked to having an interest in or a developing interest in information. Teachers can help further interests by letting students have a voice in reading topics, align reading selections with expressed areas of interest, feeling in control and taking ownership over their own learning. Teachers help students be more efficient users of information by reading for knowledge about things that they had a voice and a choice.
To promote diverse student’s success, teacher techniques include concrete hands-on activities, visuals to accompany verbal presentations, assigning small tasks with extra time to complete, including all students in class activities and expect high expectations from all students. Assigning a buddy to a diverse student will help with procedures, translators, and in general. Teachers will speak to a student in simple sentences using regular grammatical structures without calling attention to an incorrect pronunciation, rather rephrase their response. The way students are taught to learn how to read, write, and comprehend information affects their future learning, confidence, and overall feelings of success in all environments. Therefore, the genuineness and in-depth skills teacher plays makes a huge difference in students.
